The story goes that Shumacher (he of Small Is Beautiful) was giving a lecture in East Germany. The Communist slogan of the day was “Catch up and overtake”, i.e., the economies of the West.
“The economies of the West are light a freight train, speeding out of control towards an abyss where the bridge is out. But we will overtake them!”
