Horace’s New Year Word Contest

Friday, January 1st, 2010

Inspired by his long meditative practice (called Scrabble), Horace has created a new word for a New Year.  Let’s see, that’s J-8, A-1, well, you figure it out.  But what does it mean?

So, that’s our contest.  What does it mean?  Don’t forget etymology and pithy phrases.   Even better, can you draw it?   Wonderful and mysterious prizes, yet to be determined.

Colleen contributes this rare portrait.  Recent scholarship suggests it is none other than Benny Goodduck.

It is a special pleasure to welcome Special Guest Artist Helen Gaims.  Helen, take it away:

in-the-swarm

“In the Swarm” by Special Guest Artist June Mullins

June has elected to draw her own hat and we – that’s the Royal “we”, I guess – are totally blown away.  I know my hat’s off to her.  Here’s what she has to say about it:

Beekeepers say that in center of a swarm of bees that there is a peaceful hum that creates a sense of calm. I guess I am diving in to find that spot!

Many thanks to all who played.  Let’s do this again sometime soon.

Contest Winners!

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

In chronological order of entry, the Contest Winners are:

  • June
  • Horace Gaims
  • ratzingerhat

Some things remain mysterious. Horace Gaims has elected to donate his hat to the erstwhile Cardinal Ratzinger and specified that it be made of cheese. Why cheese? Because “Ratz” like cheese? Who knows? Go figure.

  • Charlee  chuckfairyhat4
  • Lucky
    luckyandphoebe

There are three things Lucky doesn’t know in this picture:

    1. The cop who busted him will become Chief of Police.
    2. The cop who busted him will become his father-in-law.
    3. Rev will put a cartoon hat on him 38 years later.
  • cuz cuzwithhat3

And the Grand Prize is —- A Hat!  I will conspire with each winner to draw their very own Fabulous Cartoon Hat.  The sky’s the limit here.  Need a 1954 Oldsmobile on your hat?  You’ve got it.     We will then place your hat on an actual photograph of you.  And!  You’ll appear on www.toonstoonstoons.net wearing Your Hat.   If you’re shy about appearing on the World Stage, don’t worry, we can pull the hat down over your eyes.  It’ll give you that je ne sais quoi, that air of Cartoon Mystery.  So don’t delay.   Order yours today!  It’s Hat Day!

I promised I’d get off the doom and gloom and get to something more cheerful.  Let’s have a contest!  Name this character.   Tell me what you know about this fabulous beastie.  I dibbs the cat.   The cat is the little creature on the left.  Its  name is Phoebe.  There is a prize.  I just haven’t decided what it is yet.  By the way, if you want to see any of these images larger, right click on them and choose “View Image”.

Say hello to the people, Phoebe.
